Preliminary Autopsy Inconclusive in Newborn Death Linked to University of Kentucky Student

Extensive microscopic testing now underway will guide determinations on the baby's cause and manner of death.

  • Fayette County Coroner Gary W. Ginn said the preliminary autopsy on the newborn was inconclusive and the death investigation remains open pending further histology and related analyses.
  • Police were dispatched Aug. 27 to a Park Avenue residence near the University of Kentucky, where a newborn boy was found in a closet wrapped in a towel inside a black trash bag and pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Laken Snelling, 21, a member of the university’s STUNT team, was arrested and charged with abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and concealing the birth of an infant, and she has pleaded not guilty.
  • According to an arrest citation, Snelling admitted to giving birth and to cleaning up and placing items, including the infant, into a black trash bag.
  • Snelling was released on a $100,000 bond to home incarceration at her parents’ home in Jefferson City, Tennessee, with conflicting reports about an ankle monitor, and a preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 26.
