Pregnant California Teacher Dies After Fall on Greek Hiking Trip

Clara Thomann, 33, a beloved science teacher from Santa Barbara, was six months pregnant when she fell 164 feet in Crete, leading to her death and the loss of her unborn child.

Clara Thomann, a Dos Pueblos High School science teacher, fell 164 feet while hiking near Preveli Beach on Crete, Greece, on December 23, 2024.
She was critically injured with multiple skull and chest fractures and was declared brain dead on December 29, days after being hospitalized.
Thomann's family confirmed the loss of her unborn child and honored her wishes by donating her organs, including her heart, liver, and pancreas.
The teacher, remembered for her passion for science and dedication to her students, has been mourned by her school community and loved ones.
Her ashes, along with those of her unborn child, were cremated in Athens, with plans for some to be spread at meaningful locations in Greece, Turkey, and the United States.
