Pregnant Bangladeshi Undertrial Flees JJ Hospital, Manhunt Launched

Authorities have registered a criminal case to probe failures in hospital escort and security procedures following her disappearance during a medical visit.

Overview

  • Rubina Irshad Shaikh, a five-month-pregnant undertrial from Bangladesh, escaped custody from Sir JJ Hospital on August 14 while under police escort for treatment and pregnancy monitoring.
  • Police say she used a washroom pretext or pushed aside a constable before slipping into the busy hospital premises and vanishing into the crowd.
  • She was arrested on August 7 by Vashi police under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Passport Act and the Foreigners Act for allegedly living illegally in India with forged Aadhaar and PAN cards and attempting to obtain a passport.
  • A fresh escape-from-custody case has been filed at JJ Marg police station and multiple teams from Mumbai and Vashi police have launched an active manhunt, with no confirmed recapture.
  • The incident has prompted officials to review custodial-escort protocols and hospital security measures for detainees requiring medical care.
