Pradhan Sets One-Year Accreditation Deadline, Unveils Industry-Led Overhaul for NITs and IISERs

A one-year review deadline anchors a shift that ties curricula and research to national tech priorities.

Overview

  • The 13th NITSER Council and the 3rd IISER Standing Committee meetings in New Delhi agreed to form industry-led curriculum panels to align programs with AI, data analytics, cybersecurity, quantum technologies, semiconductors, green hydrogen and advanced manufacturing.
  • PhD reform proposals include industry-funded and industry-guided doctorates, product-focused research, and linking doctoral supervision to faculty performance.
  • All NITs and IISERs committed to complete external peer reviews within one year and to participate in the NAAC accreditation framework.
  • Innovation measures mandate setting up incubators in the 13 NITs that lack them, initiating research parks in at least 10 NITs, and hosting a national pitching conclave for NIT-incubated start-ups in July 2026.
  • IISERs will roll out the iFLEX flexible learning model, establish research parks and incubators, create Section 8 companies, sign MoUs with BCIL, IIT Madras and IISc, and expand inclusivity through Indian languages and AI-enabled multilingual learning.
