Overview
- On June 11, T. Prabhakar Rao appeared before SIT officials for the second time and handed over his mobile phones and other electronic devices for forensic examination.
- The SIT is probing evidence that Rao directed the Special Intelligence Bureau to intercept calls of political leaders, businessmen, celebrities, journalists and members of the judiciary during the BRS government’s tenure.
- Investigators are questioning Rao based on statements from suspended SIB officers, including Deputy SP G. Praneeth Rao, who first exposed the phone tapping scheme in March 2024.
- Officials are examining allegations that Rao and his associates destroyed hard disks and erased interception records after the government change, despite legal requirements to retain data under the Telegraph Act.
- Rao returned to India on June 8 under an emergency travel document issued by the Supreme Court after being declared an absconder and having his passport revoked.
