PP Files Urgent Bid for Sánchez to Face Congress on Venezuela Policy, Corruption

The opposition seeks an extraordinary plenary during the recess to compel a full explanation of Spain’s actions and alleged misconduct.

Overview

  • On Jan. 8, the Partido Popular registered two urgent appearance requests for Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez covering Spain’s role in the Venezuela crisis and alleged government corruption.
  • The written filing, signed by PP spokesperson Ester Muñoz, asks Congress President Francina Armengol to convene the Diputación Permanente to set an extraordinary plenary.
  • The PP says Sánchez must detail Spain’s contribution to restoring democratic order in Venezuela and account for what it calls his “papel estelar” in the unfolding crisis.
  • A separate request presses Sánchez on what the PP labels systemic corruption, citing the imprisonment of ex-minister José Luis Ábalos and ongoing cases involving members of the prime minister’s inner circle.
  • Several government partners, including Sumar, ERC, Bildu, Podemos, Compromís and BNG, have also demanded a congressional appearance by Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares over Venezuela.
