Powerful Cyclone Drives Twin Cold Fronts Into Argentina as First Wave Arrives

Official forecasts flag a two-front pattern that will escalate storms midweek, triggering a weekend cold snap.

Overview

  • Argentina’s meteorological service reports the first cold front reaching south Cuyo and the southern Pampas today with a southeast wind shift, gusts up to about 60 km/h and isolated storms focused between central La Pampa and southwest Buenos Aires.
  • Mendoza is under an SMN yellow alert from tonight into Wednesday for isolated storms with 20–40 mm possible, electrical activity and hail risk, with local forecasts noting a hot day, an evening frontal passage and Zonda in Malargüe and Uspallata.
  • A second front on Thursday is forecast to intensify instability with strong to severe storms across Mendoza, San Luis, Córdoba, northern La Pampa and much of Buenos Aires.
  • By Friday the system is expected to advance north across Buenos Aires City and province, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, Corrientes and Santiago del Estero, followed by a polar air mass bringing a sharp weekend temperature drop that in Buenos Aires could reach around 10°C in hours.
  • Regional outlooks have been updated: Rosario turns from early-week heat to rain Thursday into Friday with a Friday cooldown, while separately Galicia’s Vigo area faces a cloudy, drizzly and gusty day according to AEMET.
