Powerful 7.8 Quake Off Kamchatka Triggers Tsunami Alerts, Spares U.S. West Coast and Hawaii

Emergency officials attribute the event to the ongoing aftershock sequence from July’s M8.8 rupture.

Overview

  • USGS measured a magnitude 7.8 earthquake at about 10 km depth, roughly 128 km (80 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at 11:58 a.m. PT.
  • Multiple aftershocks, including magnitude 5.8 and 5.4 events, followed within minutes as USGS issued a Green alert for fatalities and Yellow for economic losses.
  • Russian authorities warned of coastal waves of 0.5–1.5 meters and placed emergency services on high readiness, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
  • A U.S. Tsunami Advisory for the Western Aleutians was later withdrawn, and officials said there was no threat to the U.S. West Coast or British Columbia.
  • After evaluation, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported no danger to Hawaii as sea-level monitoring continued across the region.
