Powerful 7.8 Quake Devastates Southern Mindanao

Heavy rain, frequent aftershocks, blocked roads, uplifted shorelines have slowed rescue work and forced officials to shift to body recovery and urgent relief operations.

Overview

  • The 7.8-magnitude quake that struck southern Mindanao on June 8 has been linked to at least 61 deaths while official and media counts vary and dozens remain missing.
  • Rescuers have recovered bodies from collapsed buildings including a supermarket in General Santos City as teams report that chances of finding survivors in some sites are now very low.
  • Heavy rain, repeated aftershocks and landslides have blocked roads and damaged bridges, leaving many communities cut off and forcing helicopter airlifts to deliver food, water and medical aid.
  • The national disaster agency says the quake disrupted operations on dozens of road sections and eight bridges and affected one airport and two seaports while the education department reported thousands of schools damaged.
  • Scientists and officials reported coastal uplift of as much as about 2 metres that exposed coral and killed marine life, and the president has pledged reconstruction funding while damage totals are still being verified.
