Power Restored Across Yucatán Peninsula After Maintenance-Linked Transmission Failure

Authorities attribute the outage to maintenance on high‑voltage lines that tripped transmission, removing over 2 GW and affecting 2.26 million before most service returned.

Overview

  • At 14:19 local on September 26, maintenance on 400 kV lines LT ESA A3Q20/A3Q30 triggered a failure that removed 2,174 MW and cut power to about 2.262 million users in Yucatán, Campeche and Quintana Roo.
  • CFE, CENACE and Sener activated emergency protocols and progressively restored supply; by evening service had returned in Mérida, Valladolid, Chetumal, Bacalar, Holbox and much of Campeche, with CFE later reporting full reconnection in Yucatán.
  • The event temporarily took nine southeastern generation centers with 16 units out of operation, even as the presidency reported the generating fleet in good condition.
  • CFE said critical facilities relied on backup plants and the IMSS reported no impacts to patients on life support, while traffic lights and mobile and internet service were disrupted in multiple cities.
  • CFE’s operations director said two 230 kV lines between Tabasco Potencia and Escárcega tripped and a routine reclosure attempt opened two 400 kV interconnections to the peninsula, precipitating the blackout.
