Powder Mountain Unveils First Phase of Skiable Outdoor Art Museum

New installations funded largely by Reed Hastings anchor a year-round program set to formally open in 2026.

Overview

  • The resort introduced phase-one works across its terrain and trails as part of a curated, site-responsive outdoor museum experience.
  • Newly installed pieces include Nancy Holt’s “Starfire” and Nobuo Sekine’s long-envisioned “Phase of Nothingness–Stone Stack.”
  • Powder Mountain also commissioned EJ Hill’s colorful chairlift interventions and Kayode Ojo’s grove of suspended faux-crystal chandeliers.
  • Viewing is included with a lift ticket in winter and is free to the public during hiking and biking seasons in summer and fall.
  • Additional works are planned, with a trailside pavilion slated to break ground in 2026 to house immersive installations such as James Turrell’s “Apani.”
