Powai Bus Crash Kills 22-Year-Old Near IIT Gate After Scooter Fall

Police arrested the wet‑lease bus driver, as CCTV review continues alongside a BEST inquiry.

Overview

  • The collision occurred around 6:55 a.m. on route A-422 near the IIT Powai main gate, where a scooter carrying two men fell on the Jogeshwari–ViVikhroli Link Road.
  • Pillion rider Devansh Bharat Patel, 22, was run over by the bus’s left rear tyre and was declared dead at Rajawadi Hospital at 8:20 a.m.; rider Swapnil Vishwakarma, 22–23, sustained serious leg injuries.
  • BEST said the scooter slipped while avoiding a pothole and the rider was startled by a passing car, causing both men to fall in opposite directions.
  • The vehicle was an electric BEST bus from Vikhroli Depot operated on a wet-lease by EV Trans, and the conductor took the injured rider to a nearby private hospital.
  • Powai police booked driver Uttam Jijaba Kumkar for causing death by negligence and culpable homicide not amounting to murder, with FPJ reporting he was later released after a notice as officers review CCTV footage.
