Poundland Shuts Six Stores Today Under Court-Backed Rescue Plan

High Court approval with Gordon Brothers investment underpins a phased restructuring to stabilise the chain.

Overview

  • Branches in Havant, Newport, Ripley, Swanley, Uttoxeter and Partick close today, following Saturday’s Abergavenny shutdown due to lease expiry.
  • Two further closures are confirmed, with Market Harborough set for October 9 and Carlisle for November 9.
  • The turnaround targets about 67 store closures and two warehouses, reducing the estate toward 650–700 sites from roughly 800 and cutting about 1,000 jobs with 350 warehouse roles affected.
  • Several planned exits have been reversed, with 11 stores kept open including Irvine, Brighton, Anniesland and Whitby, plus seven additional cancellations at unspecified locations.
  • Operations are being simplified with £1/£2/£3 in‑store pricing, transactional online sales withdrawn, the Perks scheme retired with vouchers valid until January 15, 2026, and the Darton and Bilston distribution sites scheduled to close by early 2026.
