Poundland Shuts Six More Stores Today as Court-Backed Restructure Advances

A court-approved rescue under new owner Gordon Brothers aims to cut costs to stabilise the business.

Overview

  • Havant, Newport (Shropshire), Ripley (Derbyshire), Swanley, Uttoxeter and Partick (Glasgow) close permanently today.
  • Market Harborough is due to shut on October 9 and Carlisle on November 9 as the next confirmed closures.
  • The High Court sanctioned the recovery plan in August following Gordon Brothers’ June takeover, with £90m of funding and an estate target of roughly 650–700 stores from about 800.
  • Poundland now expects 67 shop closures after pausing 11 previously planned shutdowns, including sites in Irvine, Brighton, Anniesland and Whitby.
  • Operational changes include halting online purchases, retiring Poundland Perks with vouchers valid until January 15, 2026, removing frozen lines, closing the Darton and Bilston distribution centres on a staged timeline, and rolling out £1/£2/£3 grocery pricing.
