Poundland Shuts Dorchester Store Today as New Wave of Closures Begins

The chain is refocusing on clear price points to stabilise trading.

Overview

  • Dorchester closed on January 18, with further branches scheduled to shut through late January and February across England and Scotland.
  • Imminent closures include Plymstock and Cameron Toll in Edinburgh on January 20, Nottingham Eastpoint on January 22, Bearwood Smethwick, Lymington and Christchurch on January 23, and Gosport on January 29.
  • February closures listed by the company include Chichester and Feltham on February 8, Crayford on February 11, Chilwell in Nottingham on February 13, and Urmston on February 16.
  • Stores preparing to close are running clearance sales with discounts of up to 40% across all stock, according to a Poundland spokesperson.
  • Poundland says around 60% of grocery items will be £1 under a simplified pricing strategy following a West Midlands trial, as its estate contracts from about 800 stores toward 650–700 after a £1 sale to Gordon Brothers and a court‑approved restructuring.
