Poundland Sets Next Wave of Store Closures as Winter Cuts Pass 100 in UK Restructure

The court-approved overhaul follows a £1 sale to Gordon Brothers to create a smaller, sustainable store network.

Overview

  • A further tranche of about 30 sites has been earmarked, with closures scheduled through December to February 2026.
  • Oldham and Ballymena shut on December 13, with additional closures confirmed into January and February across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
  • The estate is being reduced from roughly 800 shops to about 650–700 under the turnaround plan.
  • Closing branches are running clearance events with discounts of up to around 40%, and some stores are selling fixtures and fittings.
  • Management and court filings cite higher operating costs after expanding into chilled and frozen ranges and online sales, plus increases in the National Living Wage and employer National Insurance.
