Poundland Sets Dates for Nine More Closures as Liverpool City Centre Store Shuts

Under new owners, the discounter is shrinking its estate in a turnaround that resets grocery pricing to put roughly 60% of items at £1.

Overview

  • Poundland’s Lord Street branch in Liverpool closed today, Thursday, January 15, following weeks of in‑store notices.
  • The retailer announced nine further closures with set dates running from January 18 to February 16, including Dorchester (Jan 18), Plymstock (Jan 20), Bearwood/Smethwick (Jan 23), Gosport (Jan 29), Chichester (Feb 8), Feltham (Feb 8), Crayford (Feb 11), Nottingham/Chilwell (Feb 13) and Urmston (Feb 16).
  • The company says it has shut more than 100 sites since June 2025 as it trims its estate from about 800 stores to an estimated 650–700 under Peach Bidco/Gordon Brothers ownership following a £1 sale.
  • Closing locations are running clearance sales with reductions of up to 40% until stock is sold, according to company statements.
  • After a five‑month West Midlands trial, Poundland has committed to pricing around 60% of grocery products at £1 and plans simpler pricing across other ranges.
