Poundland Launches Closing-Down Sales at 18 Stores as Court-Approved Restructuring Advances

The rescue under new owner Gordon Brothers is cutting the estate to roughly 650–700 shops.

Overview

  • Clearance events offering up to 40% off are live across 18 branches, with closures beginning October 5 and running through late November at locations including Twickenham, Westhoughton, Leicester, Burnley, Peckham, Walsall, Matlock and Witham.
  • Four further shutdowns are scheduled this month: Liscard on October 1, Lowestoft on October 10, Livingston on October 12 and Tenby on October 18.
  • Carlisle’s St Nicholas Gate store will close on November 9 and has begun a closing-down sale, while Market Harborough is slated to shut on October 9.
  • Of the 68 targeted closures, 57 were completed by September 28 with 11 placed on hold, as the retailer concentrates resources on its best-performing sites.
  • The plan also retires transactional online sales and the Perks app, schedules the Darton and Bilston distribution centres for closure, and entails reported job reductions of around 1,000 roles including about 350 warehouse posts.
