Overview
- The 25-member Comprehensive Planning Committee formally recommended the closures and consolidations Friday and will submit the list to the school board on Oct. 13, with a final board vote set for Oct. 27.
- The plan names nine schools for closure and two for consolidation, including the three mountain elementary schools (Stove Prairie, Red Feather Lakes and Livermore) and a proposed merger of Centennial High School with Poudre Community Academy.
- PSD says the recommendation responds to long-term enrollment decline and building-use criteria and notes the district currently carries roughly 10,000 empty seats.
- Mountain-area parents and local leaders warned the closures would force some children into very long bus rides over winter roads, disrupt students with IEPs and change daily routines for families who currently walk or drive short distances to school.
- Superintendent Brian Kingsley acknowledged the proposal will likely lead to significant layoffs but said consolidating schools would let the district concentrate resources; the district has scheduled multiple October listening sessions for families and staff to comment.
