Potsdam, Frankfurt (Oder) Mayoral Races Head to Oct. 12 Runoffs

The runoffs will gauge independent strength and the AfD’s local reach under increased legal and security-service scrutiny.

Overview

  • In Potsdam, independent Noosha Aubel led the first round with 34.0% and will face SPD candidate Severin Fischer, who took 16.9%, in a runoff on October 12.
  • In Frankfurt (Oder), independent Axel Strasser topped the field with 32.4% ahead of AfD’s Wilko Möller at 30.2%, sending both to a runoff as CDU’s Désirée Schrade (28.8%) and SPD’s Simona Koß (8.6%) were eliminated.
  • Turnout was elevated, reaching 55.5% in Potsdam and 53.4% in Frankfurt (Oder), with a marked rise in postal voting compared with 2018, including 20.9% of voters applying for mail ballots in Potsdam and 7,076 applications reported in Frankfurt (Oder) by midday.
  • Prosecutors have filed charges against Möller over suspected use of symbols of unconstitutional organizations linked to a campaign poster, and Brandenburg’s intelligence agency classifies the AfD as “gesichert rechtsextremistisch.”
  • An AfD victory in Frankfurt (Oder) would deliver the party its first Oberbürgermeister post, while Potsdam’s early election follows the recall of SPD mayor Mike Schubert, putting the SPD’s decades-long hold on the city at risk.
