Potential Discovery of Amelia Earhart's Missing Plane by Deep Sea Vision
Sonar Image in Pacific Ocean Appears to Show Earhart's Aircraft; Further Investigation Planned
- Deep Sea Vision (DSV), an ocean exploration company, has captured a sonar image in the Pacific Ocean that appears to be Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed 10-E Electra, which went missing 86 years ago.
- The DSV team used radio messages received by the Coast Guard cutter Itasca to narrow the search area, around Howland Island, where Earhart was supposed to refuel during her around-the-world flight.
- The DSV expedition, led by Tony Romeo, a pilot and former U.S. Air Force intelligence officer, surveyed more than 5,200 square miles of ocean floor using a sophisticated underwater drone.
- The sonar image shows a fuzzy gold object on a dark background that appears to have the same dimensions as Earhart’s aircraft, but skeptics want more proof—such as the registration number, NR1620.
- DSV plans to return to the site later this year to investigate further and potentially confirm the finding.
