Overview
- The charge takes effect on each user's renewal date, with the first 12 months remaining free and existing accounts billed at the end of the current annual period.
- Exemptions cover minors, people aged 75 or older, residents abroad, and identities issued for professional use.
- Users receive an email 30 days before expiry and can pay online via the PosteID area or app, or at post offices, with the option to withdraw within 30 days at no cost.
- If the fee is not paid, SPID access is suspended while the identity stays technically active for 24 months and can be reactivated upon payment.
- Poste manages a large share of SPID accounts in Italy, while some rivals already charge and others remain free for now, with CieID available as a free state alternative.
