POST Commission Suspends Certification of Massachusetts Trooper Charged in Child Assault

The oversight panel pulled Michael Gagnon’s law enforcement certification after prosecutors charged him over an alleged summer assault on a child.

Overview

  • The Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission suspended Trooper Michael Gagnon’s certification on Tuesday and ordered him to surrender his badge, firearm, cruiser, uniform, and other agency-issued equipment.
  • Gagnon was arrested at his Plympton home on Nov. 25 following an investigation by the Plymouth County district attorney’s office, the Department of Children and Families, and Plympton police.
  • A criminal complaint alleges he struck a child in the face and told the child to blame a wiffle ball bat, with the disclosure reported to a therapist and DCF on Nov. 24 after an incident dated to mid-August through September.
  • He was arraigned on Nov. 26, pleaded not guilty to domestic assault and battery and aggravated assault on a child under 14, posted $1,000 bail, was ordered to have no contact with a named person, and has a pretrial hearing set for Jan. 12.
  • Massachusetts State Police relieved him of duty and suspended him without pay, while his attorney says he denies the veracity of the allegations.
