Portugal to Recognize Palestinian State on Sept. 21 as Western Allies Plan Coordinated Declarations

Lisbon says the humanitarian crisis in Gaza prompted the decision.

Overview

  • Portugal’s foreign ministry said the formal declaration will be issued Sunday, ahead of a high-level UN General Assembly meeting on Palestinian statehood in New York.
  • France, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia plan recognitions next week, and a Macron adviser also named Andorra, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta and San Marino.
  • Portugal first announced its intent in July, citing the worsening conflict, a severe humanitarian situation in Gaza and Israeli threats to annex Palestinian territory.
  • Israel has denounced these recognitions as rewarding Hamas, and the US secretary of state labeled France’s plan a reckless move, underscoring diplomatic tensions.
  • About three-quarters of UN member states already recognize Palestine, and Portuguese media reported that Prime Minister Luís Montenegro consulted the president and parliament before finalizing the step.
