Portland Police Arrest Eric Oelkers in Shooting That Wounded Two Officers

Prosecutors plan to aggressively pursue the case, seeking to hold Oelkers without bail.

Overview

  • Oelkers, 41, was taken into custody without incident during a tactical operation around 7 a.m. Monday on the 6400 block of Northeast 82nd Avenue after a weeklong search.
  • He was booked on two counts each of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon, then arraigned Tuesday with an indictment hearing set for Feb. 4.
  • Investigators recovered a 9mm handgun near the arrest location that they believe was used in the attack, with bullets consistent with casings found at the Jan. 19 scene.
  • Court documents identify the wounded officers as Sebastian Dragomir and Randy Stowe; Dragomir was shot in the arm and neck and lost part of an ear, and Stowe was shot in the thigh and suffered a shattered femur, with both now released from the hospital.
  • Detectives tied Oelkers to the case through a DNA match to clothing, TriMet video and tips including a report from an airport parking service, and officials noted his prior state and federal convictions and open warrants.
