Portland Middle and High Schools to Reopen Thursday After Sewage Backup

The district says sanitation is complete after a first-floor backup forced early dismissal Tuesday followed by a Wednesday closure.

Overview

  • Officials announced the sewage issue has been resolved and both schools will return to normal schedules on Thursday.
  • A “significant” backup on the high school’s first floor Tuesday produced an odor and unsanitary conditions throughout the shared complex.
  • Students in grades 7–12 were dismissed at about 12:07 p.m. Tuesday, and classes were canceled for Wednesday.
  • All after-school activities and a Board of Education meeting planned for Tuesday evening were canceled.
  • The facilities team coordinated with the town sewer department and outside contractors to remediate and thoroughly sanitize the building.
