Oswego police have concluded their initial investigation into a fight that happened in the drive-thru lane of a Portillo's restaurant in the village and have turned their findings over to the Kendall County State's Attorney's Office.

Overview

  • At about 1:55 p.m. on July 30, a 50-year-old woman drove into the front entrance of the Portillo’s on Route 34 in Oswego, striking diners and killing a 2-year-old boy inside.
  • Fourteen people were injured in the crash, with eight—including the driver—hospitalized and three listed in serious condition while six others were treated and released at the scene.
  • Oswego Police Chief Jason Bastin called it a “tragic accident” and investigators have deployed a traffic reconstruction officer to review surveillance footage and witness statements.
  • Portillo’s remains closed and a makeshift memorial of flowers and toys has grown outside as community members stop to pay respects.
  • Oswego Village Board has scheduled a meeting to explore potential safety enhancements, such as protective barriers, to help prevent future vehicle incursions.
