Port Authority Plan Lifts PATH Fare to $4 by 2029, Expands Service Across All Lines

The proposal links PATH upgrades to phased fare hikes to support a system without dedicated operating aid.

Overview

  • The Port Authority unveiled a $45 billion 2026–2035 capital plan now slated for a board vote next month.
  • PATH’s base fare would rise by 25 cents in summer 2026 to $3.25, then increase by 25 cents each January through 2029 to reach $4.
  • Service increases begin in 2026, with all four lines operating seven days a week, direct weekend service restored via Hoboken, rush-hour boosts, and doubled late-night trains on Fridays; additional Newark–World Trade Center frequency upgrades follow in 2027.
  • The agency plans to phase out off-peak E‑ZPass toll discounts in 2027, a change officials estimate could generate roughly $75 million annually.
  • The capital plan also funds airport projects at JFK, Newark Liberty, and LaGuardia, advances the new Midtown Bus Terminal in two phases through 2035, and includes a $2.7 billion contribution to the Gateway Program.
