Port Authority Breaks Ground on $3.5 Billion Newark AirTrain Replacement

The 2.5-mile system is slated to open in early 2030 to replace the undersized 1996 line.

Overview

  • The project is being delivered by Tutor Perini/O&G under the Port Authority’s EWR Vision Plan.
  • The new guideway will span 2.5 miles with three stations, pedestrian connections, and a 70,000-square-foot maintenance and control facility.
  • Direct access to Terminal A will remove the current 15-minute walk between the AirTrain stop and the terminal.
  • A fleet of seven five-car trains is planned, with each train holding up to 160 passengers with luggage and capacity for up to 50,000 daily riders.
  • Port Authority leaders cite growth from about 30 million annual passengers at opening to nearly 50 million in 2024, with work proceeding as FAA flight caps at Newark extend into fall 2026 and controller staffing shortages persist.
