Porsche Weighs Virtual Shifts and Synth Sounds for Electric 718 After ‘Eye-Opening’ Hyundai Ioniq 5 N

Porsche says any such features would be optional, user-selectable.

Overview

  • Vice president Frank Moser said Porsche “learnt a lot” from Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N and is evaluating virtual sound and simulated gearshift functions for the upcoming electric 718.
  • Porsche engineers benchmarked the Ioniq 5 N after test drives, including at the Icons of Porsche festival in Dubai, to study its engagement-focused software features.
  • Hyundai’s N e-shift and N Active Sound+ emulate dual-clutch shifts and deliver selectable synthesized powertrain sounds, backing performance of 478 kW and 0–100 km/h in a claimed 3.4 seconds.
  • The electric 718 remains slated for early 2027 with an emphasis on keeping weight low, though Porsche acknowledges it will be a little heavier than the petrol model.
  • Industry views diverge on synthetic audio, with Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann rejecting fake combustion noises despite having driven the Ioniq 5 N.
