Overview
- Local gendarmes on the A40 near Bonneville recorded a Porsche 911 at 312 km/h over the weekend and said the speed equates to about 87 metres per second.
- After routine measurement tolerance was deducted, authorities said the legally relevant excess is about 170 km/h above the 130 km/h limit used in the case.
- Officers immediately retained the driver’s licence, impounded the Porsche and required a €1,500 security deposit before referring the driver to criminal proceedings.
- French media and police called the incident one of the most severe speed violations recorded in France and noted the driver has been reported in press as a Swiss national.
- Under France’s tightened rules introduced in late 2025, such large speed excesses can lead to up to three months in jail, a €3,750 fine and other sanctions pending a court decision.
