Pope to Seal Holy Door Tuesday, Closing Rome’s Jubilee

Officials cast the Holy Year’s scale as proof of a coordination model they plan to extend beyond 2025.

Overview

  • The Pope will close the Porta Santa at St. Peter’s Basilica at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, with President Sergio Mattarella in attendance.
  • Monsignor Rino Fisichella reported that more than 33 million pilgrims came to Rome for the Jubilee, led by Italians followed by visitors from the United States.
  • Fisichella called the year a source of spiritual grace and said the event, in his view, yielded lasting value for Rome’s infrastructure.
  • Papal basilicas and prayer sites such as the Scala Santa recorded attendance described by officials as never seen before.
  • Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano said the government will carry forward the “metodo Giubileo” to address challenges including Caivano, cleanup of the terra dei fuochi, penitentiary infrastructure, and addiction programs, with an eye to 2026 St. Francis commemorations.
