Overview

  • The Vatican estimates nearly one million young Catholics from 146 countries gathered at Tor Vergata on August 2 for the climax vigil of the Jubilee of the Youth.
  • The pope lamented the sudden deaths of 18-year-old Egyptian pilgrim Pascale Rafic and 20-year-old Spaniard María Cobo and asked pilgrims to pray for another youth hospitalized in Rome.
  • Highlighting that friendship is a path to peace, Leo XIV urged attendees to forge bonds of solidarity and to become missionaries of justice, peace and hope in their communities.
  • Authorities deployed about 10,000 security, medical and logistical personnel and installed large screens and audio towers to ensure the safety and comfort of overnight campers at the Tor Vergata site.
  • Organizers are now focused on final preparations for Sunday morning’s closing Mass at Tor Vergata, which will grant plenary indulgences and formally conclude the Jubilee of the Youth.
