Overview

  • During a Vatican meeting, attendees said he told visiting U.S. bishops to firmly address how immigrants are being treated under President Donald Trump’s policies.
  • El Paso Bishop Mark Seitz said Leo wants the S. Conference of CaCatholic Bishops to speak strongly on the issue.
  • A border delegation delivered dozens of letters describing families’ fear of deportation, with accounts of legal residents and even U.S. citizens being detained.
  • Seitz also showed a video of migrant experiences, after which Leo vowed to “stand with” migrants and the Catholic leaders assisting them.
  • The engagement follows Leo’s Sept. 30 challenge to the policies’ alignment with Catholic pro-life teaching and a separate private audience with about 100 U.S. migrant ministers.
