Pope Appoints French Bishop to Lead Vatican Child-Protection Commission

He relinquishes his national anti-abuse role to strengthen child-protection standards at the Vatican commission.

Overview

  • He succeeds Cardinal Seán Patrick O’Malley, who stepped down upon reaching the commission’s age limit.
  • Verny joined the Pontifical Commission in July 2022 while chairing the French Bishops’ Conference’s anti-abuse council and will now leave that post.
  • He will continue as Bishop of Savoie, overseeing the dioceses of Chambéry, Tarentaise and Maurienne, alongside his Vatican duties.
  • Created in 2014 by Pope Francis, the commission brings together clergy, survivors, parents and child-protection experts to advise on preventing and managing abuse cases.
  • In his first remarks, Verny said he accepted the appointment “with humility, gratitude and determination” to advance transparency and victim support.
