Pomona College Settles Federal Antisemitism Complaint, Commits to Policy and Oversight Reforms

A mediator from the Education Department’s civil-rights office brokered the deal, resolving an April 2024 Title VI case with implementation set for the coming months.

Overview

  • Pomona will apply the IHRA working definition of antisemitism in investigations and will treat targeted references to “Zionists” as potentially discriminatory when tied to Jewish or Israeli ancestry.
  • The college will appoint a Title VI coordinator, add a Title VI reporting option on its website, and ensure trained administrators oversee complaints.
  • Student conduct rules will tighten time, place, and manner limits for demonstrations, ban masked protests, and revise the Encampment Policy with clear, enforceable definitions.
  • Mandatory Title VI training for students, faculty, and staff is scheduled to begin in the spring.
  • Pomona will join Hillel International’s Campus Climate Initiative and create an Advisory Council on Jewish Life and Antisemitism with representation from Claremont Hillel and Claremont Chabad.
