• On August 4, a black bear wandered through an unsecured door into Kayla Kleine’s West Vancouver home and raided the breakfast laid out for her six-pound Pomeranian, Scout.
• Scout burst from a side room, barking fiercely to drive the intruder back out and pursued the bear across the yard until it scaled a fence.
• Security-camera footage of the encounter has been viewed more than five million times and circulated widely on social media and in news reports.
• The District of West Vancouver cites unsecured garbage and pet food as factors in 80 percent of local bear incidents and is urging residents to keep bins indoors, feed pets inside and close all entry points.
• Wildlife officials warn that bears attracted to human food sources pose heightened safety risks and may be subject to removal if they become habituated.
