Polls Show U.S. Mood Sours as Trump’s Economic Marks Slide

Fresh polling highlights waning confidence in the president’s handling of prices as worries about crime and political extremism intensify.

Overview

  • Gallup reports national satisfaction at 29%, the lowest of Trump’s second term, with a notable drop among Republicans during a Sept. 2–16 window that included Charlie Kirk’s killing.
  • Mentions of crime or violence as the top national problem doubled to 8% in Gallup’s reading, the highest since August 2020, with “national unity” also rising as a concern.
  • A new Reuters/Ipsos survey pegs Trump’s job approval at 41%, with 35% approving of his handling of the economy and 28% approving of his handling of cost of living, as 54% say the economy is on the wrong track.
  • AP-NORC finds Trump’s relative strengths now centered on border security and crime, while approval on the economy lags badly among independents, and immigration approval has edged down to roughly the low-40s.
  • Aggregated analysis shows sharp net negatives on key issues since early September, including inflation, trade and the economy, even as some polling still gives Republicans a 34%–24% edge on managing economic policy and about six in ten say tariffs have gone too far.
