Polls Show Majority of Americans Back Recognizing a Palestinian State as Gaza Ceasefire Teeters

New polling captures a shift toward Palestinian recognition alongside skepticism that the Gaza truce will last.

Overview

  • A Reuters/Ipsos survey conducted Oct. 15–20 found 59% favor U.S. recognition of a Palestinian state, with support at about 80% among Democrats and 41% among Republicans.
  • Roughly 60% in the same poll said Israel’s response in Gaza has been excessive.
  • Half of respondents—51%—said President Trump deserves significant credit if the ceasefire succeeds, and his foreign-policy approval ticked up to 38% in the poll.
  • A separate Data for Progress survey (Oct. 17–20) reported 54% doubt the ceasefire will hold and 62% want the U.S. to increase humanitarian aid to Palestinians.
  • The truce faced weekend violence as U.S. envoys pressed both sides, with unresolved questions over Hamas disarmament, Israeli troop pullbacks, and Gaza governance, while U.S. allies including the UK, Canada, France, and Australia recently recognized Palestinian statehood.
