Polls Put Patriotic Bloc Ahead as Court Threatens Its Place on Moldova’s Ballot

A pending court decision plus limits on observer access are raising doubts about the transparency of Sunday’s vote.

Overview

  • Latest iData figures from Sept. 7–19 show the Patriotic bloc narrowly leading the ruling PDS by roughly one point, with no party on track for a majority in the 101-seat parliament.
  • Former justice minister Fadey Nagachevschi warned that if an appeals court suspends the Heart of Moldova party for alleged illegal financing, the Central Electoral Commission could remove the entire bloc from the race.
  • The opposition drew more than 5,000 people to a march in Chișinău on Sept. 25 calling for free and fair elections and urging high turnout, according to the Socialist Party.
  • In a new statement, the Patriotic bloc said the CEC denied accreditation to over 30 organizations and 120 foreign observers, including some European groups and a Russian ODIHR request, which it argues undermines oversight.
  • Russia’s Foreign Ministry said it hopes results objectively reflect voters’ will and accused Moldovan authorities of using repressive measures, adding external pressure to the final days of the campaign.
