Polls Close in Alberta Municipal Elections as Hand Counts Begin

A 2024 law requiring manual ballot counts is set to delay full results across many municipalities.

Long lineups of frustrated voters were reported at many polling stations on Monday as people in some communities waited to cast a ballot in this year's municipal elections.

  • Manual counts started after 8 p.m., with only partial unofficial results expected overnight and many races unresolved until Tuesday.
  • Edmonton will suspend the tally at 1 a.m. and resume at 9 a.m., with official results due by noon Friday, Oct. 24.
  • Calgary plans to post a mayoral outcome late Monday or early Tuesday, with council results Tuesday and trustee totals later.
  • The Edmonton mayoralty is open with 13 candidates, including current councillors Tim Cartmell and Andrew Knack and former councillor Tony Caterina.
  • New local parties are on ballots—PACE and Better Edmonton in Edmonton plus A Better Calgary Party, Communities First and The Calgary Party in Calgary—while hand counting has driven up staffing and costs, including about $3.3 million in added spending in Calgary and expanded crews in Red Deer and Okotoks.
