Poll Finds Over a Quarter of Young Britons Put Ice in Beer

Pub operators question whether the summer habit will last.

Overview

  • An LG Electronics survey of 2,000 pub-goers reported that 28% of 18–35s add ice to beer in warm months.
  • Most requests are for lager, with some even for ales, according to landlords quoted by The Times.
  • Ten percent of young respondents wanted ice but felt too embarrassed to ask, and 20% said they had been told off for it.
  • The poll also found 35% of Gen Z drinkers take red wine on ice, compared with about one in ten across all pub-goers.
  • Some in the trade attribute the habit to Continental holiday influence, while JD Wetherspoon founder Sir Tim Martin voiced dismay.
