Polish Bishop Grzegorz Kaszak Resigns Over Sex Party Scandal Involving Priest

Bishop Kaszak steps down amid allegations of a priest in his diocese organizing a sexual event with a male sex worker; the incident leads to criminal investigation after a participant overdoses and initially prevents paramedics from entering.

  • Grzegorz Kaszak, the Bishop of Sosnowiec in southwest Poland, resigned despite being well below the general retirement age of 75, following allegations of a sexually explicit event arranged by a priest under his diocese involving a male sex worker.
  • After a participant of the party overdosed on erectile dysfunction pills and passed out, paramedics were initially prevented from entering the residence, leading to a criminal investigation focused on a 'failure to provide assistance to a person in a situation that poses an immediate threat of loss of life or serious damage to health'.
  • The priest accused of hosting the event identified as Fr. Tomasz Z, termed the incident as 'an obvious attack on the church', denying that he had hindered paramedics from accessing his apartment and questioning the label of 'orgy' on the event.
  • Despite not being officially charged, Fr. Tomasz Z was dismissed from all duties by Bishop Kaszak, who also initiated an in-house canonical trial that could result in the priest's defrocking.
  • The scandal, which has drawn considerable attention and is widely referred to as a 'gay orgy', comes as Poland undergoes a rapid process of secularization, with many Polish citizens increasingly rejecting the Church and taking steps to formally leave it.
