Polis Expands Emergency Declaration as Meeker Fires Surge to 23,000 Acres

Record fire weather driving a lightning-triggered blaze to nearly 23,000 acres has triggered a statewide resource mobilization

Overview

  • The Lee and Grease fires merged overnight and grew from 13,000 to almost 23,000 acres with zero containment as of August 6.
  • Gov. Jared Polis extended a disaster declaration to cover the combined blaze alongside the Elk and Leroux fires.
  • The Elk fire stands at about 8,300 acres, has destroyed at least two homes and one outbuilding, and remains uncontained.
  • More than 230 firefighters, seven aircraft, nine engines and seven hand crews backed by heavy equipment are battling the fires under red flag warnings.
  • Fire managers will host a 7 p.m. community meeting Wednesday at Meeker High School to update residents on fire growth, weather forecasts and evacuation plans.
