Police–HSE Probe Underway After Worker Dies in 30-Foot Silo Fall at Speke Factory

A joint investigation now examines the circumstances at Dugdale Nutrition’s Speke site.

Overview

  • Emergency crews were called around 7.20pm on 8 September to Woodend Avenue in Speke after reports that a man had fallen into an empty silo.
  • The man was pronounced dead at the scene and next-of-kin have been informed, with police stating his age as 45 and the company referring to him as 43.
  • Merseyside Fire and Rescue used a rope system to lower an NWAS Hazardous Area Response Team member into the silo, and gas readings were reported as normal.
  • Police remained at the site on 10 September, with the Underwater Search and Marine Unit attending as scene work continued.
  • Dugdale Nutrition said it is cooperating with the inquiry, and the HSE is separately prosecuting the firm in an unrelated case listed for 9 October.
