Police Treat Peacehaven Mosque Fire as Suspected Hate-Motivated Arson

Detectives have opened Operation Spey as a hate-crime arson inquiry with public appeals for relevant video footage.

Overview

  • Emergency services were called at about 9:50pm on Saturday to Phyllis Avenue, where the blaze damaged the mosque’s front entrance and a parked vehicle, with no reported injuries.
  • Sussex Police asked anyone with CCTV, doorbell, dashcam or mobile footage from the area to come forward, quoting Operation Spey or reporting anonymously to CrimeStoppers.
  • Officers increased their presence at the scene and began additional reassurance patrols at other places of worship across the county.
  • Peacehaven Community Mosque said on Instagram that two individuals set fire to a car outside and announced the mosque will remain closed until further notice.
  • Press-reported footage shows masked suspects and an apparent use of accelerant, though those details have not been confirmed by police as the investigation continues.
