Police Thank Rescuers After Missing Boy, 13, Found Safe on Holcombe Moor

Police describe a volunteer-led night search using drones under thick fog.

Overview

  • Greater Manchester Police launched the search on October 12 after reports that a 13-year-old had gone missing on Holcombe Moor near Bury.
  • Rossendale and Pendle and Bolton mountain rescue teams joined officers, search dog units and the fire service drone team, with Mid-Pennine Search and Rescue also deployed.
  • Teams searched on foot, by vehicle and with drones in mist and darkness before two Rossendale volunteers located the boy near Red Brook at about 9:30 pm.
  • Police said he became separated from friends near Peel Tower and was found several miles away lying on the ground, cold but uninjured, then reunited with family in Holcombe Village.
  • Officers thanked the volunteers, saying their response potentially saved his life, as regional teams had also handled earlier callouts that day including a motocross incident and a serious mountain-biking fall.
