Police Stop 60–65 km/h Tuned Bicycle in Bavaria, Rider Tests Positive for Cannabis

Police say the self-modified bike qualified as a motor vehicle under German law.

Overview

  • Officers stopped the 38-year-old on Friday midday in Neuburg an der Donau after seeing him travel at speed without pedaling.
  • The bicycle was fitted with a gas throttle and its motor power limiter had been disabled, according to police.
  • Top speeds of 60 to 65 km/h meant the machine required registration, insurance and an appropriate driving licence.
  • The rider had no TÜV approval, insurance or registration and did not hold a licence, police said.
  • A roadside drug test indicated cannabis, a blood draw was ordered, multiple complaints were initiated and the man was sent home on foot.
