Police Step Up Roadside Eye Tests Under Operation Dark Night

Police are stepping up roadside vision checks using Cassie's Law for immediate revocations.

Overview

  • Lincolnshire Police have launched Operation Dark Night to identify drivers who cannot meet the legal vision standard, with Humberside Police running a two‑week push of roadside screening checks.
  • Officers can require drivers to read a number plate from 20 metres and, under Cassie’s Law, can contact the DVLA to revoke a licence on the spot if the test is failed.
  • One driver stopped in the campaign could read a plate only from six metres, and police cite estimates that 5% to 10% of motorists may not meet the required standard.
  • Drivers who must wear glasses or contact lenses to drive risk fines of up to £1,000, three points, possible licence revocation and insurance issues if they fail to wear them or do not inform the DVLA (licence code ‘01’).
  • A new Road Safety Strategy is being developed, and reports indicate it could include proposals such as mandatory vision tests for motorists over 70.
