Police Step Up Checks at Major German Stations in Weekend Security Sweep

The push centers on deterring violent offenses through weapons prohibitions at selected hubs, with Cologne’s main station closing for ten days after a software delay.

Overview

  • The Bundespolizei is conducting a nationwide operation through the weekend with heightened patrols and checks at more than ten major hubs, including Munich, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Aschaffenburg, Stuttgart and Mannheim, to prevent violent crime and reassure travelers.
  • In Bavaria, a temporary order bans carrying dangerous items at the four named Hauptbahnhöfe from Friday 15:00 to Sunday 03:00, with additional officers from the Federal Police’s standby units supporting checks.
  • Hannover expanded a joint “Quattrostreife” with city police, federal police and DB Security, reporting over 5,000 checks, about 600 proceedings, more than 150 knives seized and declines in violent and property crime, and the weapons-ban order at the station is being extended.
  • Berlin reports mixed results under its weapons-ban zones and stop-and-search orders, with more frequent checks but fewer finds per control as the share with weapons fell from 8.2 percent in March to 4.7 percent in October.
  • Cologne Hauptbahnhof shuts for ten days from Friday night for other works after the planned commissioning of a new electronic signal box was postponed due to software problems, with long-distance and regional trains rerouted and a further closure still expected for the switchover.
